Four Hotels Built for Stargazing

From the Namib desert to the shores of Maui, these properties are designed with the night sky in mind.

Some hotels are defined by what happens after dark. They are built in places with minimal light pollution, where the night sky is the main event. Here are four of the best.

01

Zannier Sonop

Namibia

Zannier Sonop

The hotel sits on 5,600 hectares of private wilderness in the Namib Desert. Its tented suites are built into a hillside of granite boulders. Here, night falls suddenly, revealing the Milky Way with exceptional clarity. Sonop is the only hotel in Namibia to hold three Michelin Keys. The isolation is fundamental to the experience.

02

Tierra Atacama

Chile

Tierra Atacama

The Atacama Desert is widely considered the finest stargazing location on earth. This 28-room lodge, which reopened in April 2025 after a significant renovation, sits on the edge of San Pedro de Atacama. Guided sessions begin at 9pm in a natural amphitheatre. The guides move from Western astronomy to Andean cosmology, offering a different perspective on the same constellations.

03

São Lourenço do Barrocal

Portugal

São Lourenço do Barrocal

Set on a 780-hectare working estate in Portugal's Alentejo region, Barrocal is inside the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve. This was the world's first certified Starlight Tourism Destination. Two observatories are nearby and resident astronomers are available. Days are for the farm, with long tables and slow breakfasts. Nights belong to the sky.

04

Four Seasons Resort Maui

Hawaii, USA

Four Seasons Resort Maui

A stargazing holiday does not require forgoing the beach. This resort is in Wailea, an area of Maui known for its dark skies and clear nights. Torch-lit dinners on the lawn transition to astronomy sessions, with the Pacific Ocean as a constant soundtrack. It is a compelling combination of coastal life and cosmic exploration.
